Discerning the differences between window films can be tricky, especially when they have similar visible light transmittance (VLT) characteristics. However, there can be big differences including some you can see and some you can feel. Let’s break it down and compare two popular high-VLT window films – Enerlogic 70 and 3M Prestige 70.
Let’s start with the similarities:
Both window films have VLTs around 70%, which means that they allow a similar amount of visible light to shine through into your home or business. Also, both films are non-corroding so they don’t require applying a sealant to protect the film upon installation.
Both window films also block harmful UV rays. EnerLogic 70 and 3M Prestige 70 deliver by blocking 99 percent of UV rays to help protect fabrics and furniture from fading. However, the biggest and most sought after benefit that both films deliver is rejecting about 50 percent of solar energy from the sun. That keeps interiors cooler during the hot summer months, and more importantly, reduces air conditioning costs.
Now, on to the differences:
Both window films block some of the sun’s rays to keep you cool in the summer. But the main difference is that EnerLogic 70 also increases energy efficiency in the winter while 3M Prestige 70 only increases energy efficiency in warm weather. That means 3M Prestige 70 isn’t very beneficial in colder climates. In fact, 3M Prestige 70 and other non-low-e window films can actually cost you money in the winter by not reducing heat loss and at the same time blocking out free heat from the sun’s warming rays.
On the other hand, EnerLogic 70 delivers year-round energy savings. It utilizes low-e technology that serves as insulation to keep radiant heat from escaping through your windows in the cooler months. It can reduce heating costs as much as 10 percent in cold weather climates. Plus, EnerLogic 70 also delivers up to 33 percent more cooling-season energy savings than films like 3M Prestige 70. This combination of cooling and heating savings could save you up to $3,500 over the life of the EnerLogic 70 window film in a typical home.
Another key difference between EnerLogic 70 and 3M Prestige 70 is clarity. You might notice that when you look closely, you can see your reflection in glass. You’d also probably notice your reflection in the 3M Prestige 70 film because, at a rate of 9 percent, it’s more reflective than unfilmed glass. However, EnerLogic 70 only reflects at a rate of 4 percent, which makes it virtually invisible and improves the clarity of your windows, actually improving your view to the outdoors when compared to unfilmed glass. Plus, it doesn’t change the appearance of your building from the outside, which means that EnerLogic 70 could actually make your building more beautiful inside and out.
As you can see, there are definite differences between EnerLogic 70 and 3M Prestige 70 window films. Both are easy add-ons that help keep the sun out to keep your home or building cooler in summer, but only EnerLogic 70 delivers year-round energy savings and improves the clarity of your windows.
